I'm On A Cock Diet For Jesus

It's been about three weeks since I became a full-time cartoonist! It's been pretty good, I really can't complain (actually, I can complain, and often do, but really shouldn't). I thought nine years would have taught me all I needed to know about the webcomics business, but it turns out that once you tie your ability to make rent to your creative prowess it creates deep pockets of self-doubt and worry where none existed previously, like slimy black tar pits of insecurity bubbling out of your gut. My hope is to use my extra free time to develop some sort of tiny drill with which to extract these oily deposits and sell it in drums as an alternative fuel.

Being holed up in the apartment working all the time certainly isn't good for the ol' inspirational process, so I'm glad that tonight is Pub Night. Every Thursday night Phillip and Gary and I head down to the Peculier Pub here in Manhattan (at the corner of Bleecker and Laguardia, a couple of blocks south of Washington Square Park) for a large dose of liquid creativity. If you're reading this, you're welcome to stop in and say hi on any given Thusday evening (although you may want to email me if you're coming from a distance, there's usually one week a month I'm not able to make it for whatever reason).

I'm always surprised at who shows up, there's almost always some random webcartoonist in town, and the 400 beers on the menu exert their own sort of gravitational pull on our kind. Bullshitting with other webcartoonists is just about the best source of inspiration there is, you're almost guaranteed to get a good quip or two you can steal from them to stick on a t-shirt. Inspiration is the nice way of saying "I stole your idea."

Another good source of inspiration, at least for geezers like me, is to go back and steal from my younger self. Here's a t-shirt design I whipped up a few years back that I never ended up using for reasons which should be self-evident:

I was always happy with the Gamera illustration, but the text... well, there's not a big market for a shirt with text like that, I'm guessing. I think about repurposing the illustration about once a year but I'm waiting to come up with the exact right tagline. If any of you "inspire" me with a suggestion, I'll be happy to repay you with a few free shirts if I end up using it. Think of it like Threadless, as if it were run by a cheap-ass Jew.

I'd happily wear that sans text.

I think it may come to that, unless the absolute perfect slogan can be found.

I dunno... Something classic, maybe, like "Are you my mommy?"

Gamera looks a little sad and desperate, to me, anyway. :)

I like this idea lot but I think Chris over at Achewood has a shirt that says 'Huuuugs' on it.

Hell, I'd wear that as it is. It's just inceniary enough.

Or perhaps "Just a vicious abomination looking for love/cock/jesus/jews/Oprah"

April 20 2006, 18:47:27 UTC 6 years ago

Same. Or you could work in a "Hunchback of Notre Dame" angle if you modify the art a little bit. Quasimodo never looked so vicious.

Rawr!

I would wear that t-shirt if the caption was "Rawr." Though I wouldn't necessarily buy it. Just in case you ever wanted to make a t-shirt solely to give it away to an internet stranger person.

Re: Rawr!

I agree with that caption, "rawr". I love the cute turtle, but I wouldn't wear anything with "jesus" on it.

Honestly, I think the design would work without any tagline at all. It's on a level where a tagline almost just takes away from it. Something about Turtle Soup might work, though.

Footprints below gamera, like instructional dance steps. They don't have to make sense in practice, in fact it's better if they don't.

Thriller!!

As I was staring at your shirt design the first thing that popped into my head was Michael Jackson's 'Thriller dance'. The thought of Gamera showing Michael and the rest of the monsters how thriller should be danced made me laugh out loud. Once I heard the rumor that Gamera and Jackson were drinking buddies. It all made sense. Do you really think Michael Jackson could have come up with those moves without the help of the Mighty Gamera?

April 21 2006, 01:38:20 UTC 6 years ago

Well, you could simplify it like:
"I give great blowjobs"
or,
"lemmie fondle that"
or being that he seems to be staggering like a drunk might walk:
"one too many"
or,
"I'm not drunk."

I want to see the cowputer, Clara, on a shirt. There's something REALLY appealing about the way the mouth is drawn really big and massive. I light up whenever I see Clara's mouth and eyes in the comic.
